engage

How do we engage indigenous leaders? We are constantly working with local churches and like-minded organisations in countries where YFC does not have a local presence. We meet with local church leaders to understand the youth culture, church situation, and if YFC can effectively assist the local churches to reach out to young people.

When there is a good fit, we start the pioneering process. During this process, the local leaders report directly to the YFC Asia Pacific Area office. We work very closely with them, investing considerable time and resources.

This involves:

  • Effective Recruitment -- We have learned through 60+ years of experience, that having the right leader from the beginning greatly improves the likelihood of a YFC national program getting established and remaining effective in the long run.

  • Consistent, Relational Communication -- We send out regular emails, make regular phone contact, and get together as many times a year as possible to build our relationship with the pioneering national leaders and provide mentoring to them.

  • Accountability -- Through the contact, we agree to the vision and strategy of the local nation's youth outreach and jointly establish goals. Then, we help keep the local leader accountable to these goals and objectives.

  • Coaching -- The Area staff coach the pioneering leaders through this startup phase.

Engaging indigenous leaders is a primary focus of the YFC Asia Pacific Area office.

YFC Japan is just beginning. Kazuknori Endo is our new national leader and he is working closely with Scott to develop a ministry strategy, plan, and partners. Scott and Endo talk over the phone almost weekly.

YFC has indigenous leaders in Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan now. This photo is from a time together with the team in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Through Vonage, Scott and Sasha Kim (our Central Asia leader) talk bi-weekly for free.

Joshua and Grace Nam (center) are helping us to re-start YFC in the Philippines. Based out of Baguio, they are leading a team of indigenous staff and volunteers. Scott and Cat are shown here with them at the National Director and Spouse Retreat in Chiang Mai.

Regular commun-ications go out to all interested staff and volunteers from the YFC Asia Pacific Area office. The picture above is an example of one of these regular email internal communications.
