YFC Nepal

Nepal YFC is reaching its youth through prayer ministries, camps, bible classes, medical mission clinics, literature distribution, concerts and youth evangelism training.

In early 1994, a YFC Board of Trustees was established in Nepal. This Board searched for a National Director, and in October, 1994 the Board selected Mr. Nico Thapa to be the Director, and he is still our National Director of Nepal.

Nepal has five regions and 75 districts. YFC Nepal currently has full-time staff in approximately 12 of the districts with a goal of having a staff member in each district throughout the country.

Thousands of young people have found Christ through the ministry of YFC since 1994. More than 100 people on seven medical mission teams have treated more than 15,000 patients during those years. In 1999, the largest youth conference in Nepal's history was held in Kathmandu attracting more than 1,000 youth.

In March, 2001 a team went to Western Nepal near the Chitwan National (Tiger) Park to hold medical clinics. Each doctor (and a dentist) had a station where they checked hundreds of people who came from miles around. Many had never seen a doctor or a "white" person before.

The team had the opportunity to share Christ with the patients, conduct church services and a youth rally, and distribute Gospel tracts. They ministered alongside the Nepal YFC Staff, who served as translators and organizers. Every year Nepal YFC makes a giant leap forward as a result of the team's ministry.

Nepal YFC is in the process of building a youth center to house its staff and be able to reach out to youth in the area through training, Bible studies, and events.

History: In 1951, the Nepalese monarch ended the century-old system of rule by hereditary premiers and instituted a cabinet system of government. Reforms in 1990 established a multiparty democracy within the framework of a constitutional monarchy. The refugee issue of some 100,000 Bhutanese in Nepal remains unresolved; 90% of these displaced persons are housed in seven United Nations Offices of the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) camps.

Nepal is the world's only Hindu Kingdom. Hinduism is recognized as the national religion, but the constitution guarantees some religious freedom for other faiths. People are free to choose their religion.

Christianity is growing at an amazing rate in Nepal! Before 1960 no Christian was allowed to live in Nepal. By 1985 ther were about 50,000 believers. Now, there may be as many as 500,000 Christians in Nepal.
