YFC Fiji

YFC Fiji has targeted younger age youth with the Gospel and is actively involved in training for volunteers, interns, and church youth leaders. Our ministries to young people in this nation include:

  • Character First Education Program: This program is for Grades 5/6 and deals with character building, which is already a part of our education requirement. It has been very well received by the schools.
  • Personal Development Program: This program is for Grades 7/8 and deals mainly in areas of self-esteem and also areas of personal worth. In Fiji, this age group has the highest rate of school dropouts and other teen related problems.
  • Leadership Development: Our Leadership program is in response to the lack of leadership qualities in the highest level of our country. Our program has been taken in by the Government of Fiji through the Ministry of Youth and Sports. We have completed a two-day workshop with their entire principal and senior youth workers of the ministry of youth on Leadership. This training includes all of their workers around Fiji.
  • Clubs: All our clubs are now run by our local churches and we focus our work on strengthening the churches to run effective youth programs and also encourage the church to do youth evangelism. We have become the arm of the church to do training, programming, and leadership training.
  • Camps: We run youth camps in cooperation with our local churches who do all the followup after a camp.
  • Postponing Sexual Involvement: This is our High School program. We have developed a culturally appropriate curriculum from materials from three different leading programs. We are just starting our partnership with schools to distribute and teach the materials. Demand from the schools is high.

History: Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). A 1990 constitution favored native Melanesian control of Fiji, but led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. Amendments enacted in 1997 made the constitution more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May of 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil.
