History: Until 1947, Bangladesh
formed part of the British-ruled Indian provinces of
Bengal and Assam. Independence came in 1971 after a
civil war. Bangladesh is located in southern Asia, between
the foothills of the Himalayas and the Indian Ocean,
covering an area of approximately 55,598 sq. miles/144,036
sq km. Bangladesh is one of the world's poorest nations,
suffering from over population and periodic natural
disasters such as devastating floods and cyclones with
enormous loss of life and property. A secular state
from 1971-1988, Islam was declared the state religion
in 1988.
